Every month the Administrative/Professional (A/P) Council highlights an A/P staff member through a series of questions as another way for the Illinois State community to connect. This month readers can get to know Mike Kruger, director of labor relations and academic employee relations.
As director of labor relations and academic employee relations, what do you do?
I am responsible for planning, negotiating, and administering the labor contracts for Illinois State’s 16 bargaining units. I am also the primary contact for supervisory staff regarding Administrative Professional, Faculty Associate, Non-Tenure Track Faculty, and Graduate Assistant employee relations matters.
How long have you been an employee at Illinois State?
Just over nine months.
What do you love most about working at Illinois State?
The “student first” mindset – in the end, we are all working toward the same goal.
What is one fact about yourself that might surprise people?
I still own my first car (it’s been 30 years!), which I restored with my dad while I was in high school and college.
When you’re not working, what are you most likely doing?
Spending time with my family – my wife and four kids keep me busy.
What is your favorite spot on campus?
The Quad. I lived in Normal for seven years and never realized this beautiful, tree-filled space was hidden just off College Avenue.
What quote inspires you most? Why?
Right now, “Do all things without arguing and complaining” – Paul, Philippians 2:14. The Bible is full of practical wisdom; this is one we can all strive to practice no matter where we are in life.
