The College of Applied Science and Technology welcomed a fantastic group of new faculty at the start of this academic school year! Some of CAST’s newest faculty members took the time to answer a series of questions that share their background, research interests, hobbies, and more.

This week’s profile features Dr. Bin Lizzo, from the School of Kinesiology and Recreation.

Tell us about yourself! Where are you from? Where did you study?

I am originally from Illinois but have lived in a total of nine states so far. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater where I studied Liberal Studies with a minor in Leisure Studies. Fun fact, that minor is where I first dipped my toe into recreation as a field of study.

Next, I completed my master’s degree at Texas A&M University, where I studied youth development. I then followed that with a Ph.D. at the University of Illinois where I studied recreation, sport, and tourism.

What do you enjoy most about teaching?

The aspect I enjoy most about teaching is interacting with students in the classroom. I am a strong believer in changing the world one student at a time. Every day I teach I feel privileged to have the opportunity to impact a student in a positive way.

What’s on your research agenda? Any interests you’d like to share?

My research interests focus on the intersection of fandom, literature, and the leisure experience. Specifically, I have focused on Harry Potter and the fan experience in a virtual community.

What do you like to do in your free time?

During my leisure time, I am a foster home for sick and underweight kittens. I am a compassionate cat lady and plan to save the world one kitten at a time. I am also an avid reader and love to spend time outside.
