The Multicultural Outreach Team (MCOT) in Student Counseling Services is excited to announce a series of three workshops we will be offering virtually to students during the spring 2021 semester: Voices of Discovery, Disarming Racial Microaggressions, and an Anti-Racism Workshop. The series is designed as a three-step process, although students are allowed to self-select into the programs that fit their interests and schedules. Students who complete all three workshops will receive a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Certificate from MCOT. Below are descriptions of each workshop, as well as information on how to register.
Step 1: Voices of Discovery
Voices of Discovery (VOD) is a program that promotes awareness of diversity and expands the opportunity for cross-cultural and inter-group interaction on campus. VOD is an immersive, growth-oriented program where students will have an opportunity to learn about bias, stereotypes, power, and privilege in order to understand the roots of problematic interactions and how to change them in our global society. Through participation in the program, students increase their understanding of themselves, the groups they belong to, and of others who belong to groups different than their own.
In the Voices of Discovery program students from different identity groups are brought together for an honest, reflective dialogue about diversity. The groups consist of 12 to 15 students and are guided by two trained facilitators. The group discussions focus on identity development, stereotyping, discrimination, awareness, and sensitivities. Students commit to meet for two two-and-a-half-hour sessions spaced one week apart.

Step 2: Disarming Racial Microaggressions
Racial microaggressions are subtle verbal or nonverbal slights that can make people of color feel insulted or invalidated. Even well-intentioned people can commit microaggressions and might be unaware when they commit a microaggression. This three-hour interactive workshop can help students recognize the different forms of microaggressions and identify safe and effective ways to address microaggressions.

Step 3: Anti-Racism Workshop
Racial justice requires an active mindset and action-oriented steps. In this three-hour interactive workshop, students will learn about the historic and current presence of institutional racism in the U.S.; discuss power and privilege; discuss equality, equity, and justice; and explore strategies for developing anti-racist attitudes and behaviors.
