The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has set the official start date for the 2023 tax filing season.
The IRS announced it will begin accepting and processing 2022 tax returns on January 23. The deadline to file 2022 federal and Illinois tax returns or an extension is April 18.
The IRS recommends visiting IRS.gov for common questions. They also state that the fastest and easiest way to file and receive a refund is to file electronically with direct deposit.
Taxpayers who made $73,000 or less in 2022 can file electronically for free using the IRS’s Free File program. Free File and other commercial tax filing companies will be accepting and preparing returns where they will be held until the January 23 processing date. Visit the IRS article for more tips and recommendations.
Individuals in the U.S. on an immigration status may be ineligible to use the IRS Free File program. For individual tax or tax preparation questions, consult with your tax advisor.
