Doug Simpson, engineering technology ’08, M.S. project management ’11, is a proud technology alumnus and credits much of his success to Illinois State University. He has always dreamed of starting his own business and carrying on the legacy of three generations of entrepreneurs. Part of that goal includes creating an environment where others can fulfill their dreams as well. Simpson also wanted to give back and support others, partly by hoping to return to Illinois State to offer students opportunities to build a foundation for their own professional careers.
After graduation, Simpson landed a job as a toolmaker, eventually advancing to tool design. As the business grew, Simpson jokingly says he got into sales by accident when he learned the business had a huge need for sales engineers. Specifically, the company needed representatives with an understanding of both technology and business. After a couple of promotions, he quickly learned it is very difficult for companies to find professionals with both skill sets. Things were going well, and he was able to use the skills from both his undergraduate and graduate degrees. In Dr. Ron Meier’s project management courses, he learned about working with stakeholders in different departments in order to understand their needs and be able to relay and meet those needs.
Like many other people, during the pandemic, he was laid off from his job. Simpson decided to use his skills to create a business offering representation to other businesses in the form of a sales and marketing agency. Many manufacturing companies use independent sales representatives and agencies in place of their own internal sales staff. There is a huge need for this type of independent sales representation. This work has utilized both his technical expertise and his people skills. Companies need people with technical skills who can personally interact and build strong relationships with customers. The companies, as well as the customers, benefit by having one source representing multiple products and services.
