The 2023 Midwest Independent Conference Championship came down to the final routine of the night to decide which team would be taking home the trophy. Thanks to a clutch performance on floor by sophomore Jaye Mack, Illinois State’s gymnastics team clinched the MIC title in March.
Appears In“From the moment the team stepped on the floor to vault, they were zoned in and focused on winning this championship,” said head coach Bob Conkling. “They knew every tenth was going to count in this meet and they took advantage of every opportunity they had.”
The MIC title was the Redbirds’ first since 2012 and the second for Conkling. Mack earned the individual championship on floor, while sophomore teammate Alana Laster won the all-around, senior Angelica Labat—the MIC Gymnast of the Year—won the vault, and freshman Joy Ziegenfelder tied for first on the beam. Laster and Mack then represented the Redbirds at the NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Norman (Oklahoma) Regional.
