Following a tradition of building bridges between students and the local community, Illinois State University is once again gearing up for the Town of Normal Meet and Greet, scheduled for Monday, September 18. The event is a collaborative effort by the Center for Civic Engagement, the Student Government Association, and the Town of Normal, and it represents a unique opportunity for students to connect with community leaders, voice their concerns, and gain insights into the town’s initiatives.
Taking place from 5-6:45 p.m., the event location has witnessed a shift over the years to accommodate increased attendance, moving from Medici in Uptown Normal to the Children’s Discovery Museum. This year, the event is back at City Hall on the fourth floor of Uptown Station (11 Uptown Circle, Normal), where it was held in 2022 after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the meet and greet, students will be able to engage with Town of Normal Council members and representatives, including Mayor Chris Koos, who traditionally makes an appearance at the event. His remarks are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. The meet and greet also provides a platform for students to discuss issues that matter to them.
Over the years, this event has not only served as a networking opportunity but has also been a catalyst for real change in the community. Student concerns have influenced local legislation, exemplifying the importance of student input in community matters. That way, the Town of Normal Meet and Greet stands as a testament to the power of dialogue, collaboration, and engagement.
Students are free to come and go whenever they like during the event. Attendees will also enjoy complimentary food catered by DESTIHL. City Hall, located on the fourth floor of Uptown Station, is accessible by elevators. Any questions can be directed to the Center for Civic Engagement at (309) 438-1100.
