For more than a decade, ReggieNet was the officially supported learning management system, or LMS, for Illinois State University. That changed this fall when Canvas was fully adopted as its replacement. Now, ReggieNet’s days are truly numbered.

Last chance

While staff have migrated thousands of courses from ReggieNet to Canvas since early spring, some faculty members may yet have information in ReggieNet useful for future teaching.

Instructors have until Thursday, November 30, to manually save any data from old ReggieNet course sites. The Center for Integrated Professional Development’s Canvas instructional support page includes guides for saving ReggieNet items like files, quizzes, or gradebook information.

Those who had ReggieNet course sites migrated to Canvas should also take time before the end of the month to ensure all of their data is now in the new system. For example, a few instructors have noticed that some quiz questions may not have migrated properly. Those who discover issues like that should email ProDev@IllinoisState.edu as soon as possible.

Note that individual student information was not included in any course migration. In order to save student grades or assignment submissions, instructors need to download those manually from ReggieNet before the deadline.

Final sunset

Once ReggieNet is gone, it will be gone for good.

On December 1, all access to ReggieNet will be turned off, and technology support staff will begin to dismantle the system, pruning its connections with other parts of Illinois State’s digital infrastructure. Because of the limitations of Sakai, the open-source engine which powers ReggieNet, there will be no permanent archive. ReggieNet will be erased.

This final step in ReggieNet’s life represents the culmination of a years-long process to identify and adopt its successor. Staff from departments across campus worked with faculty and student advisors to vet and select the new official LMS, one which will be much more supportable for years to come. Replacing ReggieNet with Canvas also allows for several long-requested features, like a dedicated mobile app and a common calendar where students can see all of their assignments across all of their classes.

Extensive teaching support is available on the Center for Integrated Professional Development’s Canvas Instructional Support pages, which includes information on incorporating materials from ReggieNet into the new LMS. The Center’s support team is available to assist instructors and staff Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at ProDev@IllinoisState.edu or (309) 438-2542.

Instructors should send their students to the Technology Support Center for assistance using Canvas. The TSC can assist all users, including instructors, with basic technology concerns, like logging into Canvas or installing mobile apps.
