As many of you are aware, the men’s basketball game on Saturday, December 9, between Illinois State University and Norfolk State University was regrettably marred by the report of a racial slur directed at a Norfolk State player by an Illinois State fan.

I want to reiterate what was said in previous University statements: Any use of racial slurs and other offensive language targeting people for their background or identity is abhorrent and is not tolerated by Illinois State.

Redbird Athletics and Illinois State staff moved swiftly to begin investigating the incident and are committed to completing a comprehensive review of the circumstances. That process involves going over game footage and speaking with those who were present, including coaches, student-athletes, game officials, staff on the court and sidelines, and spectators.

I, along with our Athletics leadership, have personally reached out to colleagues at Norfolk State to extend our apologies to their student-athletes, athletics staff, and their university community. We are committed to maintaining an open dialogue with them on this matter. Going forward, Athletics and University staff will work with colleagues at Norfolk State to keep them apprised of the progress of our review.

Please be assured that Illinois State is committed to being an open, welcoming, and inclusive campus community. During this challenging time, it is essential to remember that, as members of a campus community, we have a genuine responsibility to treat each other in accordance with our University’s core values, namely, respect for others and a commitment to diversity and inclusion in all our interactions. We encourage each and every Redbird to join us in creating an inclusive campus community in which all students, faculty, and staff can thrive.

Sincerely,
Aondover Tarhule
Interim President
