John Arthur Dossey

(1944–2024)

We are sad to announce the passing of Dr. John Dossey. In his distinguished career as a mathematics educator, Dossey was a vital member of CeMaST, Illinois State University, and the mathematics education community as a whole.

His career as a professor of mathematics education here at Illinois State spanned 30 years, and he was named a distinguished professor of mathematics in 1989. In addition to his teaching and research, he also contributed to the field of mathematics education through his leadership and service at the national level, which included serving as president of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM).

In 1991, the Center for Mathematics, Science, and Technology (CeMaST) was founded under the leadership of Dossey, Tom Fitch (1937–2011), and Franzie Loepp (1939–2014), and Dossey served as CeMaST co-director from 1991 until his retirement in 1999.

His legacy lives on through CeMaST; his students and colleagues at Illinois State and beyond; his research, scholarship, and service in the field of mathematics education; and, most importantly, all his family and friends.
