The Latin American and Latina/o Studies Program is pleased to announce the Third Annual Workshop hosted by the Community of Belonging and Success (COBAS). This event aims to promote understanding of recruitment, retention, and degree completion for first-generation students.
Date: Thursday, May 23
Time: 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Location: Jaime Escalante Conference Room, Vrooman Center
Over the past two years, our workshops have provided a vibrant forum for faculty and staff to exchange strategies and explore the latest research on the recruitment and retention of first-generation Latina/o/x/é students. This year, we are honored to welcome Dr. Howard Rambsy II, a distinguished research professor from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Rambsy has been featured in the Chronicle of Higher Education for his pioneering approach to student success. His keynote presentation, titled “Safe & Salient Spaces: The Importance of Enriched Environments for Underrepresented Students,” will draw from his extensive experience teaching courses for first-year Black men and women at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Abstract
Every fall semester since 2004, I taught a course for first-year collegiate Black men at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, and every fall semester since 2009, I taught an additional course for first-year collegiate Black women at the university. Both courses have been vital to student retention and graduation rates, along with their acclimation to university life. My presentation will highlight some of the ways that these programs have been successful, created a sense of belonging among students, and provided them with intellectually rewarding experiences. Overall, I will explain the significance of constructing safe and salient spaces, that is, special environments that offer a sense of security as well as noticeable distinct elements designed to empower underrepresented students.
