Each year, University Housing Services honors outstanding housing staff with the Floyd Hoelting Team Player Award.

This award was established in 1980 by Dr. Floyd B. Hoelting, who served as director of the Office of Residential Life from 1977-1995 and upon retirement endowed the award. Hoelting prioritized accomplishing as a team and stressed the importance of teaching teamwork by having model team players in every area of the housing department. The organization’s ultimate goal during his tenure was achieving as a team.

The award recognizes extraordinary team loyalties, efforts, and successes by University Housing Services employees who have consistently assisted other staff, University Housing, and the University in meeting goals and commitments.

This award recognizes employees who have consistently assisted other staff in meeting their goals and commitments. This year, Residence Hall Coordinator Krista Peters and Associate Director Megan McKinnon are the honored recipients of the Floyd Hoelting Team Player Award.

Praised by staff as an “unsung hero” of the department, McKinnon works diligently in areas of human resources, fiscal management, and other general business operations.

“She is an amazing team player,” said a nominator. “Megan’s always jumping in to assist even if it may not be her area of responsibility, and our whole department reaps the benefits of her team mentality.”

McKinnon’s commitment to hard work, dedication to job responsibilities, and willingness to lend a helping hand toward her team members all make her an excellent recipient of the Floyd Hoelting Team Player Award.

Peters is frequently noted for her commitment to going above and beyond while performing her duties as a residence hall coordinator.

“Her willingness to step up and do more exemplified to her team that she cared about their experience,” said one nominator. “Being a professional staff member in housing is a very demanding role, and she balances the needs of students, staff, and process beautifully.”

Peters’ ownership of the residence hall coordinator position coupled with her desire to foster community and belonging within her area make her a great recipient of the Floyd Hoelting Team Player Award.

The Floyd Hoelting Team Player Award is dedicated to Floyd Hoelting. Hoelting received his doctorate in student personnel at Oklahoma State University and gained experience in housing and food services at Western Illinois University prior to working at Illinois State. Hoelting began his career at Illinois State in 1977 where he worked until 1995 when he retired as housing and food services director.

The following rubric is followed when choosing the Floyd Hoelting Team Player Award each year:

TEN QUALITIES OF A HOELTING TEAM PLAYER

1. Helps other teammates be right—not wrong.

2. Looks for ways to make new ideas work—not for reasons why they won’t.

3. Finds a role to play on the team that contributes to making the team successful.

4. Helps others win and takes pride in their victories—we, us, our; not they, them, their.

5. Uses every opportunity to speak positively about others and about the team.

6. Maintains a positive mental attitude, no matter what the circumstances.

7. Acts with initiative and courage as if it all depends on you.

8. Does everything with enthusiasm and purpose.

9. Does not lose faith in the team—works to improve the team—never gives up on the team.

10. Demonstrates the belief, “Whatever you want, give it away.” This may sound odd, but it works that way; i.e., power, respect, enthusiasm, compassion, recognition, etc.
