Illinois State University’s Eta Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, has been named an “Honor Chapter” for its outstanding activities in 2023-24, an award that was bestowed to only 13 chapters nationwide in 2024. This is the 10th year for Illinois State to earn this distinction, due in large part to the leadership of Professor Angela Bailey de las Heras, chapter adviser.

Each summer, the 635 chapters of Sigma Delta Pi nationwide are asked to submit an annual report detailing their numerous activities and projects from the academic year. Based on these reports, the National Executive Committee chooses approximately 10-15 “Honor Chapters” annually. This recognition is based on the caliber of chapter projects that reflect the Sigma Delta Pi mission of honoring excellence in the study of the Spanish language, contributing to cultural understanding, and upholding the goals of the society.

The Eta Upsilon chapter of Sigma Delta Pi is a Registered Student Organization of the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures, and all Spanish majors and minors who meet the eligibility requirements are invited to participate. The group organizes social events to stimulate Spanish conversation outside of the classroom, cultural activities, and volunteers in the local community. Sigma has been involved with high school Spanish programs in Unit 5 and at University High School, inviting high school students to campus to prepare for the Advanced Placement exam and talk to them about adding a Spanish minor or major in college. The department is very proud of the work these students and their dedicated adviser do on behalf of the program, our students, and language learning in general. This fall, the department will host a celebration of 10 years of Sigma’s honor chapter status.
