Submissions are now open for the 2025 University Teaching & Learning Symposium hosted by the Center for Integrated Professional Development. Held every January for the past 25 years, the symposium is an opportunity for faculty, staff, and graduate students to come together to learn about innovative teaching techniques through an invited keynote speaker and peer-reviewed presentations, panel discussions, round tables, posters, and workshops. Members of the University community are invited to submit proposals for presentations, panel discussions, and posters between now and October 6, 2024, following this year’s theme of “Teaching in Turbulent Times: Creating Community with Care and Empathy.”

The 2025 University Teaching & Learning Symposium will be the 26th symposium since 1999.

The theme centers on ways to create learning spaces that support students and those who work with them as we, as a campus community, navigate turbulent times. The current social and political climate, along with rapid technological changes, presents challenges and opportunities for higher education. The goal of the symposium is to discuss ways to engage local, national, and global contexts in our classes and to foster inclusive and empathetic learning environments that address the unique needs of our students while also attending to our well-being as faculty and staff.

The full Call for Proposals is available through the Center for Integrated Professional Development and includes submission guidelines, examples of successful proposals, and the evaluation rubric. Submissions need not address the theme directly but should align with Illinois State University’s signature pedagogy: the Framework for Inclusive Teaching Excellence. For inquiries about the submission process or the symposium itself, please email Dr. Dana Karraker, assistant director for educational development programs at the Center for Integrated Professional Development.

The University Teaching & Learning Symposium is sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Alice and Fannie Fell Trust.
