School of Information Technology students Ashley Strehlow and Katelyn Bale secured honors at the IEEE Real-Time Communication Conference held October 8-9 in Chicago. The students are mentored by Dr. Shukri Abotteen, instructional assistant professor of computer science in the School of Information Technology.
Strehlow and Bale won the “Best Poster” award for their poster showcasing their research into “Enhancing Autonomous Vehicle Safety with AI-Powered Pothole Detection.” Their research looks into how to enhance autonomous vehicle safety through the implementation of an AI-detection model for real-time image processing to detect potholes and road hazards.
IEEE describes the RTC Conference and Expo as “a globally recognized collaborative event, where industry and academia connect. Leveraging its unique academic setting, this annual conference brings together software developers, network engineers, entrepreneurs, business executives, students, and academic educators and researchers to promote an open exchange of ideas to lead future development in the rapidly changing field of real-time communications.”
“I’m so proud of Ashley and Katelyn,” Abotteen said. “This was their first time presenting a poster at the RTC conference, and I was just happy that their poster got accepted, considering that they were the only undergraduate presenters at the conference. They put in a lot of time and effort over the summer, and I’m glad to see that their hard work paid off and that they won first place!”
