The CEFCU Arena concourse has undergone a significant lighting upgrade, making the space brighter and far more energy-efficient. As part of a $120,000 renovation, the arena replaced 80 outdated sodium vapor light fixtures with modern Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights. These new fixtures consume approximately 68% less electricity than the old lights, which were originally installed over 35 years ago.

The project not only improves the overall aesthetic of the concourse, but it’s also a major step toward achieving the sustainability goals outlined in the University’s strategic plan. Specifically, the installation of LED lighting supports Section III, Energy Goal A of the plan, which commits to reducing university-wide energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. By lowering energy usage, the project will contribute to the University’s long-term commitment to sustainability and its goal of minimizing its environmental impact.

In addition to the lighting fixtures, the arena also replaced outdated light control panels, further increasing the efficiency of the system. This is aligned with Energy Goal B of the Sustainability Strategic Plan, which focuses on improving campus lighting efficiency by implementing LED technology across the University. Illinois State has been systematically replacing incandescent bulbs with LED lights across campus for several years, a strategy designed to cut energy consumption and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

LED lights are known for their energy-saving properties. Unlike traditional bulbs, LEDs produce light by passing electricity through a semiconductor, which consumes less power and generates less heat. This efficiency makes them an ideal choice for long-term energy savings and sustainability efforts.

The $120,000 project is expected to pay for itself in just over two years through the energy savings generated by the new lighting.

“I’m going to call this a win-win-win!” says interim director of athletics, Jeri Beggs. “The experience within the arena is improved, we’re saving money on energy costs and we’re contributing to the university’s sustainability goals.”

This initiative is a step forward in the University’s ongoing efforts to modernize infrastructure and reduce its environmental footprint while providing a better experience for those cheering on the Redbirds at CEFCU Arena.
