The University Teaching and Learning Symposium held on January 8 at the Bone Student Center was a resounding success. This year’s theme, “Teaching in Turbulent Times, Creating Community with Care and Empathy,” resonated deeply with attendees, reflecting the pressing need to build inclusive, empathetic learning environments in the face of social and political shifts, rapid technological advancements, and evolving student needs.
Participants engaged in thought-provoking discussions on key topics, including navigating the current social and political climates in the classroom, leveraging technology for positive change, promoting inclusive practices on various levels, and cultivating well-being for faculty and staff during times of change. The symposium provided a platform for the campus community to share ideas, strategies, and perspectives, fostering a collaborative atmosphere aimed at overcoming challenges and embracing opportunities in higher education.

One of the highlights of the symposium was the presentation of the Outstanding University Teacher Awards. Every year, Illinois State recognizes its most outstanding teachers through this program, demonstrating the university’s commitment to teaching excellence and student learning. The awards ceremony honored individuals who have made significant contributions to their students’ educational experiences, celebrating their dedication, innovation, and impact in the classroom.
Dr. Michele DiPietro, a renowned expert in faculty development and pedagogy, delivered the keynote address and held a workshop during the symposium. As the executive director for faculty development and the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning at Kennesaw State University, DiPietro shared their extensive knowledge on creating inclusive, effective, and resilient learning environments.
Feedback from attendees highlighted the symposium’s impact in inspiring and equipping educators with practical tools and insights to support their students and themselves. The strong sense of community and collective purpose invigorated participants, motivating them to implement the insights and strategies they had acquired in their teaching practices.
Looking ahead, plans are already underway for next year’s symposium, which promises to build on the success of this year’s event. Stay tuned for more details for another enriching and transformative experience.
Let’s continue to collaborate and shape a brighter, more supportive future for our students and ourselves!
