A championship-level golf course that serves as home to Redbird Golf is just a pitch and a putt away from campus. Located at the northwest corner of Gregory and Adelaide streets, Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University offers tournament-like conditions with a private course feel. It’s home to the Redbird men’s and women’s varsity teams, but also open to the public, accommodating approximately 30,000 rounds annually.

Course’s evolution

The course opened in 1964 with President Robert Bone, left, hitting the first shot. It’s undergone dramatic changes and improvements over the years as it’s grown into a 6,915-yard, par-71 course today with recent renovations of all bunkers, golf shop, locker rooms, pavilion, and the hole No. 1 tee box and cart staging area.

All cart paths and the parking lot were repaved last year. A major addition came in 2012 with the construction of the Jim and Carole Mounier Golf Training Facility.

The G.O.A.T.

A comprehensive course renovation in 2000 was designed and coordinated by Redbird golf legend D.A. Weibring ’75. Weibring is the most accomplished golfer in Illinois State history, with five PGA Tour and five Champions Tour victories on his resume. He’s been equally successful in the business of golf as a leader in golf course design and renovation. In 2007, the course was renamed in Weibring’s honor for his contributions to the team, course, and the University. Today, it serves as a prime recreation destination for campus and community members alike.

Record setting

The course record is a 9-under-par 62, carded by Redbird men’s golfer and Bloomington native TJ Barger, during a U.S. Amateur qualifier in 2023.
