School of Information Technology–ACS alumni have established the Larry Brumbaugh Endowed Scholarship in honor of longtime Professor Larry Brumbaugh. The scholarship will provide support to a student accepted for endorsement or enrolled in good standing in the School of Information Technology. Alumni will gather to honor Brumbaugh with a reception during Homecoming 2017.
Brumbaugh joined the Applied Computer Science Department in July 1978 and remained a key member of the faculty until his retirement in 2002. However, retirement did not end his commitment to the school. From 2002 until 2013, he returned to accept several teaching assignments when needed, including serving as emeritus faculty. During his tenure, he was selected by students as the “ACS Outstanding Teacher” numerous times.
ACS alumni Harry McKee ’83, Peter Tapling ’82, and Jeff Ricketts ’83 were instrumental in the establishment of the scholarship. The genesis of the endowed scholarship grew out of a conversation during a golf outing among ACS alumni about the impact Brumbaugh had on them and his influence on their success in life.
“We quickly decided that a scholarship to honor someone who influenced each of us was a worthwhile exercise,” Tapling said. McKee added that Brumbaugh “had such a positive impact on all of us, and not just as students, his influence was felt long after our time at ISU, and continues to be felt today. From day one in my first class with Larry (MAT168), he challenged me to excel.”
Through the Larry Brumbaugh Endowed Scholarship, Brumbaugh’s legacy will continue to foster the pursuit of excellence among School of Information Technology students.
