So much in our lives has changed in 2020 due to COVID-19. In the Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) Department at Illinois State University, some of those changes have yielded positive results, such as moving many of the services at the ISU Speech and Hearing Clinic to teletherapy. Clients continue to receive high-quality services from the comfort and safety of their own homes while the student clinicians now know how to conduct therapy remotely.
Other CSD activities were impacted by COVID-19. Each spring two CSD student organizations host a banquet to reflect and celebrate the past year’s accomplishments. This event provides an opportunity to honor select department members and recognize the students in the department that were chosen to receive CSD scholarships. The students that applied for scholarships completed an essay and submitted two letters of recommendation. Unfortunately, the 2020 banquet was canceled and CSD students were not able to receive recognition for their achievements at that time. However, CSD expresses appreciation for the efforts of these students by reporting their names and awards. Honorees of the various 2020 CSD Scholarship are listed below:
- Robert and Frieda Augustine Endowed Scholarship awarded to Victoria Reuschel
- Robinson/Eckelmann Outstanding Speech-Language Pathologist Clinician awarded to Makyra Hewitson and Allison Szramek
- Outstanding Audiology Clinician awarded to Elizabeth Fetscher
- Paul Rosenberger Scholarship from the Sertoma Breakfast Club in Decatur awarded to Christy Mahrt and Clara Marchini (not pictured)
- Mary K. Keiser Scholarship awarded to Lauren Anthony, Hannah Belke, Gianna Delia, Kaylee Genzel, Macy Pohlman, and Kacie Ryan
These honorees represent the high caliber students who attend Illinois State University. CSD is grateful for the support of the individuals and organizations who fund scholarships for worthy students like the ones listed here.
