Every month, the Administrative/Professional (A/P) Council highlights an A/P staff member through a series of questions as another way for the Illinois State University community to connect. This month, readers can get to know the Executive Director of Alumni Engagement Kris Harding.
Job title/position: Executive Director of Alumni Engagement. Job duties include providing strategy and leadership to develop, implement, and maintain programs and meaningful opportunities for alumni to enhance loyalty, dedication, and support for Illinois State University. I work closely with my team, our amazing Redbird volunteers, campus partners, and University Advancement.
How long have you been an employee at ISU?: I have worked at Illinois State for 23 years in different units on campus. I have worked in University College as an academic advisor, Office of Admissions, College of Education, and now in Alumni Engagement. Each position has allowed me the opportunity to learn more about the University and grow professionally.
What do you love most about working at ISU?: I love the students. Additionally, I value the relationships that I have built while working on campus. The sense of community here is second to none!
What is one fact about yourself that might surprise people?: I am not a huge fan of flying.
When you’re not working, what are you most likely doing?: Spending time with my husband, Jamie (a two-time Redbird alum), and our children Kaleb and Emma (junior at ISU).
What is your favorite spot on campus?: I have three favorite spots on campus: 1. The Quad on the first day of classes. The energy and excitement from the students, faculty, and staff is palpable; 2. The bridge, especially during prospective student tours. I love watching the families walk across to the Quad to see the flowers in the spring; 3. Redbird Plaza during commencement weekend. Our students and families are so proud to be a part of the Redbird alumni community.
What quote most inspires you? Why?: “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” —Maya Angelou. Why? First impressions and the feelings that come with them last a long time. A positive first impression is uplifting, and I try to think about that each day.
