Applications for the 2024 Civic Engagement Fellowship are now open until November 26. This will be the third year the Center for Civic Engagement (CCE) has hosted the Civic Engagement Fellowship program. One faculty/staff fellow will be selected. Because 2024 is a major election year, the fellowship will be focused on elections. Application proposals should focus on research related to elections or electoral engagement.
The Department of Politics and Government’s Dr. Meghan Leonard was named the 2022 Electoral Engagement Fellow. According to her, the fellowship allowed her to become more engaged with students during the election that year, as it opened new avenues for collaboration across the University. “The Electoral Engagement Faculty Fellowship allowed me to more deeply explore the student voter experience. I was able to use the support provided to encourage practical changes to voting on campus and conduct publishable research,” said Leonard.
The fellowship is open to any Illinois State employee classified as tenured or tenure-track faculty, non-tenure track faculty, administrative professional exempt, or civil service exempt. The fellowship will run from January 1 to December 31, 2024. Compensation will be $5,000 awarded in monthly installments as additional pay. The fellow will also select the Student Fellow in January to serve as a research assistant.
“We are excited to be able to offer these fellowships, which give faculty and students the chance to engage in research related to electoral engagement and to use that knowledge to enhance students’ civic competency and participation,” said Dr. Katy Strzepek, director of CCE. “During an election year, it is critical to focus our fellowship on the electoral process to ensure that students at Illinois State University understand how to participate in the democratic process.”
Applications for the 2024 Civic Engagement Fellowship will close on Sunday, November 26, at 11:59 p.m. To learn more, visit the Center for Civic Engagement fellowships page.
