Every month, the Administrative/Professional (A/P) Council highlights an A/P staff member through a series of questions as another way for the Illinois State University community to connect. This month, readers get to know Yelyse Walls ’15, M.S. ’24, coordinator of recruitment and EDI engagement in the Office of Admissions.
How long have you been an employee at ISU?
I have been employed professionally since August 2015; however, I have been working on campus since my freshman year beginning August 2010!
What do you love most about working at ISU?
The flexibility and community. I value my time on campus connecting with countless students and campus partners while also enjoying my time spent away maintaining a healthy work-life flow.
What is one fact about yourself that might surprise people?
I always have a song that can fit any conversation I am in.
When you’re not working, what are you most likely doing?
Listening to a podcast while driving back and forth between Normal and Chicago!
What is your favorite spot on campus?
The Multicultural Center is like a second home. I can drop by randomly to hang with students and staff and grab a quick snack. I think it’s also my son’s favorite place because he loves running through the hallways like Sonic the Hedgehog.
What quote most inspires you? Why?
“I realized that I don’t have to be perfect. All I have to do is show up and enjoy the messy, imperfect, and beautiful journey of my life.”—Kerry Washington
I appreciate this quote because I am perfectly imperfect, and I can still show up authentically and unapologetically!
