Drs. Kaitlyn Selman and Justin Turner will deliver their talk, Razing the “House of Screams:” Teaching, Learning, and Living the Reparations Won Curriculum, as part of the African American Studies Fall Speaker Series. Selman and Turner will critically examine the Reparations Won: A Case Study in Police Torture, Racism, and the Movement for Justice in Chicago curriculum. The lecture will be held October 25, 2024, at 11 a.m. in Stevenson Hall, room 401, at Illinois State University. This event is free and open to the public, though registration is requested.
“This project examines how the Chicago Public Schools’ (CPS) curriculum impacts students, educators, and community members in Chicago,” said Selman, an assistant professor in the Criminal Justice Department, who will lead the discussion alongside Turner, an assistant professor in sociology. The “Reparations Won” curriculum, which is taught in eighth and 10th grade history classes, addresses the history of police torture and the fight for reparations in the city.
Selman and Turner used in-depth interviews with CPS stakeholders, including teachers, former students, and community members to examine how people critically interact with the social justice curriculum.
