Distinguished Professor Cheri Simonds will present “Cursed with Knowledge: Breaking the Spell” at 5 p.m. Monday, November 4, in the Old Main Room of the Bone Student Center at Illinois State University.
The event is free and open to the public.
Dr. Simonds teaches in the area of communication pedagogy and instructional communication and serves as director of COM 110. As director, she is responsible for hiring, training, and supervising a staff of 50-60 instructors who teach in the general education program at Illinois State.
Throughout her tenure at Illinois State University, Simonds has published work on classroom management training, speech evaluation training, criterion-based assessment, interactive instructional strategies, and authentic portfolio assessment. A nationally recognized teacher training and assessment program that she and her colleagues developed has been acknowledged by the Basic Course Division of the National Communication Association (NCA) in naming Illinois State’s Communications as Critical Inquiry Course as the Inaugural Program of Excellence Award in 2008.
Simonds was named Outstanding University Teacher in 2006 and Outstanding University Researcher in 2017, Illinois State University’s Dr. John Chizmar and Dr. Anthony Ostrosky Scholarship of Teaching and Learning Award, and Distinguished Lecturer for the College of Arts and Sciences. She served as lead author on the NCA Resolution on the Role of Communication in General Education, chaired the NCA Task Force on Strengthening the Basic Communication Course, and has received the National Communication Association’s Inaugural Basic Communication Course Distinguished Faculty Award.
