Illinois State’s Solar Car Raycing Team has harnessed the rays of the sun to power its racing machines for 20 years, becoming one of the University’s most visible registered student organizations along the way.
Appears InWhat began with a “shell” of a car with no motor or wheels purchased from another university became Mercury 1 back in 2004. Today, the team zooms around road courses and competes in cross-country races in Mercury 6.
And while simply finishing races was a measure of success in the early days, the Redbird team is now a regular podium finisher. The team plans to soon begin its build of Mercury 7.
