The Civil Service Council will feature a Civil Service employee at Illinois State University each month to highlight an exceptional colleague and the outstanding work being done on campus. This month, learn about and applaud Business Administrative Associate Casey Vitalez.

What is your position on campus, and how long have you been with the University?

I am a business administrative associate in the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs, and I have been with the University (and in this office) for eight years.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

I love my job because it allows me to help contribute to someone else’s day by making it less stressful, hopefully more productive, and all around better. I like knowing that my support can help others focus more on the work that they need to do, which is important to all of us! There is also a certain sense of satisfaction I get out of making that meeting fit onto the calendars of 15 other people who have equally busy schedules.

We have amazing student employees in our offices. The interactions I get with them are priceless. Knowing that I can be just a small part of their growth as a student makes me very happy. They teach me something new every day.

What are your hobbies or favorite pastimes?

I love to travel. My husband and I also enjoy taking our 3 dogs for walks at local parks or nature preserves. I enjoy crocheting and once crocheted the fifth doctor’s scarf from Dr. Who as part of a costume. I also play old video games in my free time.

What else would you like others to know about you or your time at ISU?

I feel very fortunate to work here. My biggest piece of advice to others would be to take advantage of our classes for yourself. I never dreamed I would get a degree beyond my bachelors, but I am halfway through a master’s program now. It’s been challenging to balance with work and life, but it will be worth it in the end!

More about Vitalez from Tracy Willet, executive administrative associate:

Casey is a proud Redbird and a tremendous asset to the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs (OVPSA) and to Illinois State University in general. She not only serves as our business administrative associate in the OVPSA, but she is also currently pursuing a master’s degree in the graduate program for public health. Additionally, Casey recently completed the Redbird Edge Mid-Level Career Development Track, during which she collaborated with colleagues to develop the professional development session, “Navigating Generational Differences: TikTok Edition.” (This session is a must—so fun and informative!)

In my short time as Casey’s supervisor, I have seen her take on tasks and assignments with integrity and grace, always bringing a sense of humor and authenticity. She is eager to learn and challenge herself, and this past year has been incredible witnessing Casey’s growth both personally and professionally. A phenomenal team player, Casey is a keen observer and listener, taking time and thought to ensure others feel seen, heard, and valued. She keeps us all up to date on the latest TikTok and Taylor Swift trends! It is a GIFT to work alongside Casey, and we are so truly grateful for her dedication to Illinois State.
