Sister Simone Campbell, the leader of the Nuns on a Bus movement will give a workshop on campus Saturday, Nov. 2.
Campbell is the national coordinator of NETWORK, a Catholic social justice lobby striving to close the gap between rich and poor. She will talk about faith and how it can achieve universal justice.
She will present a workshop, Promoting the Common Good, from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Alumni Center at Illinois State University. Cost is $20 per person. Students are free but must register via email at normalsue@aol.com. All others can register online.
She will also give a free talk at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 1, at Illinois Wesleyan University as part of the Pruyne Lectureship, and hold another workshop at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 3, at the new Covenant Community. More information is available online.
The first Nuns on the Bus tour traveled through nine states during the 2012 presidential campaign, highlighting the struggles of the poor and elderly. Their recent summer 2013 Nuns on the Bus tour – 6,500 miles through 15 states – brought awareness to common sense, ethical immigration reform.
The talk is part of the Jim and Gwen Pruyne Lectureship in Progressive Christianity. Funded with support of the Bloomington-Normal Progressive Christian Community and New Covenant Community, which Jim Pruyne co-founded, the lectureship sponsors talks by prominent theologians.
Jim Pruyne was campus minister at Illinois State University for 41 years and founded the United Campus Christian Foundation. For 28 years, Gwen Pruyne served as editor and business manager of two Illinois State research centers.
