University Galleries Director Barry Blinderman will lead Friends of the Arts Gallery Gallops February 5 and March 5 at University Galleries.
The February 5 gallop will focus on the 2014 Faculty Biennial, featuring painting, sculpture, ceramics, glass, wood, drawing, photography, printmaking, video, graphic design, and sound created by current faculty in the School of Art and arts technology program. Among the artists exhibited are those who have shown their work nationally and internationally.
The March 5 gallop will focus on an alumni exhibition, winding on and through the lands. This exhibition presents recent videos, photography, drawings, sculpture, and installations by Diana Gabriel M.F.A. ’07; Jenny Hansen, M.F.A. ’09; Jason Judd ’06; Mary Laube ’09; Joe Madrigal, M.F.A. ’08; Jason Sherman ’90, M.S. ’99; Lisa Thomas ’12; and Neal Vandenbergh ’10. The title is taken from a line of a poem by Sherman.
University Galleries Curator Kendra Paitz recommended the tours as an opportunity for people to learn about and discuss interpretations of the artists’ work and influences.
“I think the greatest thing when you are walking through with the director is that you get a lot of behind the scenes information,” said Paitz, M.B.A. ’06, M.A. ’11.
The Gallery Gallops are free and open to the public. They run from 5:30 to 6:15 p.m.
Meanwhile, University Galleries will also host another installment of New Sounds, a yearlong concert series providing exposure for musician-composers whose work diverges from the traditional formats of jazz, classical, pop, and rock. Wei Zhongle will perform 8 p.m. February 28. The Chicago-based band features polyrhythms and interweaving bass, clarinet, percussion, and prepared guitar with a strong Eastern influence.
