In 2004, while serving in the U.S. Army, Melissa Stockwell was on a routine convoy through central Baghdad when her Humvee was struck by a roadside bomb. The blast took her left leg, and today she stands as an above the knee amputee on her left side. After a year of rehab at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, she went on to swim in the 2008 Beijing Paralympics and was honored to represent the country she defended in Iraq. In 2009 Stockwell turned to the sport of triathlon and is a three-time Paratriathlon World Champion and a recent Ironman. She believes in a life of sport and co-founded the Chicago based Dare2Tri Paratriathlon club that gets athletes with disabilities into the sport of triathlon.
