Donald Reed has been named the recipient of the Neal R. Gamsky Quality of Student Life Award. In his role in University Housing Services, he helped facilitate the opening of Cardinal Court and the 24-hour guest registration system in the residence halls. As associate director, he oversees the University’s apartment communities, residential safety and security, living-learning communities, and summer conferences
The alum started in University Housing Services in 1999 after receiving his master’s in counselor education in 1997 and his bachelor’s in communication in 1994.
Reed implemented the 24-hour guest registration system in the residence halls. He also helps coordinate the Division of Student Affairs’ annual On Common Grounds event that follows the Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner.
He has served as a mentor in the Student Affairs Group of Elders (SAGE) organization that offers guidance to rising student affairs professionals. His dedication to student success is also exemplified in his leadership of the Interdenominational Youth Choir.
In his nomination, Reed was described by a colleague as “a professional and personal inspiration.” A student noted that “his dedication, creativity and motivation have modeled the characteristics that I would like to develop” as a future student affairs professional.
Neal Gamsky was vice president and dean of Student Affairs at Illinois State from 1973 to 1991. He established an endowment to recognize a Division of Student Affairs staff member who made outstanding contributions to the quality of life for students, and who promoted excellence in individual effort and concern for the quality of the campus environment through service and support. Reed will receive a plaque, monetary award and his name on a plaque in the Student Services Building.
