The Department of Philosophy, along with the Illinois State University Philosophical Society and the Religious Studies Faculty Forum, will sponsor “The God Debate: Gratuitous Suffering and the Problem of Evil,” which will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, March 27, in 130 Schroeder Hall.
Michael J. Murray, executive vice president of programs at the John Templeton Foundation, will argue that animal suffering does not disprove God’s existence, while Illinois State Philosophy Professor Daniel S. Breyer will argue that animal suffering counts as strong evidence against the existence of an all-good, all-powerful, and all-knowing God. Murray is the author of Nature Red in Tooth and Claw: Theism and the Problem of Animal Suffering. Breyer is an assistant professor of philosophy and the director of the religious studies program at Illinois State University.
