In the following Q-and-A, senior Dan Melzer shares some of his experiences as a philosophy major.
What have you enjoyed most about being a philosophy major at Illinois State?
I think that the thing I enjoyed the most about being a philosophy major at ISU has been the interesting people I have gotten to meet, both my fellow students and the professors.
If you had to take one—and only one—philosophy book or article to a desert island, which one would it be?
I would bring David Lewis’ On the Plurality of Worlds, hoping that after a decade or two of being stuck on the island reading it over and over again, some of it might start to make sense!
Do your friends and family know that you study philosophy?
No, it’s my dark dirty secret. Just kidding, maybe.
What other majors did you consider?
What majors didn’t I consider or pursue at some point? From creative writing to criminal justice, but I finally found my niche in philosophy.
What are you plans after graduation?
I am going to be moving to Virginia with my wife and 4-month-old son to attend the Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William & Mary starting in the fall.
