Business as usual in the School of Kinesiology and Recreation (KNR) has meant “going digital” in recent years. From attracting new students and keeping current students informed, to staying connected with alumni, social media provide the platforms to get the job done in KNR!
Informing prospective students about our academic programs in athletic training, exercise science, physical education teacher education, and recreation and park administration, and our graduate programs just became much easier with the recent release of six promotional YouTube videos posted on the KNR website! Interested students will hear current students talk about their experiences taking classes and working with their professors. Images of KNR’s facilities as well as potential work locations are all featured in the videos, giving future students a view into what to expect as a student as well as when they graduate. Alumni share memories about Illinois State and offer insights on how their degree programs prepared them to be competitive and successful in a changing job market. Through Twitter and Facebook, the school keeps current KNR students informed about job openings, upcoming social events, fast-approaching deadlines, and happenings in and around campus. The use of QR codes (Quick Response Code), a type of two-dimensional barcode, has helped grow the KNR Facebook and Twitter pages as students can easily connect to the KNR Facebook page and Twitter feed by use of their smartphones.
Keeping alumni informed of upcoming events and news about our current students has been made easier through Illinois State Stories, a website and content management system featuring articles, events, and digital media. Through Stories, articles have been posted on a variety of topics ranging from our fourth annual Sport Management Symposium and our alumni reception to exciting lobbying efforts made by our physical education teacher education students in Springfield.
Social media provide the necessary tools to ensure that KNR connects and stays connected with its community of current and future students, alumni, and faculty. By sharing updates, photos, videos, and messages, the KNR family can stay connected no matter if they live in Normal or at the South Pole! The School of KNR will continue to incorporate social networking tools to augment, not replace their real-world relationships by communicating with stakeholders in new and different ways!
