Illinois State University construction management students participated in the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) student competitions in Downers Grove on October 15–18. The students participated in three different competitions.
Commercial division
The Illinois State team in the ASC student competition (commercial division) took second place after Bradley. The team competed with other nine schools in the Midwest region, which includes Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Kentucky.
The competition project was the Student Life Building at Green River Community College in Auburn, Washington. The project is to replace a 36-year-old existing building. This 61,000-square-foot and two-story student life replacement project includes a book store, food service operations, meeting rooms, staff space, and fitness center. The price of the project is around $22 million.
The ISU team developed a bid proposal for the project including quantity take-off, cost estimate, schedule, safety plan, site logistics plan, quality assurance and control plan and value engineering. The team was coached by Illinois State alum J.R. Peterson, an estimator at River City Construction, and by Associate Professor Euysup Shim.
Design build division
Kevin Tuckey, Jason Brown, Oliver Carbajal, and Mike DeLuca, with interior and environmental design students Kristina Pinakidis and Justine Scrimali competed in the ASC Great Lakes Region student competition (design build division) sponsored by McCarthy.
Joe Cleary was the faculty advisor. This year’s conference and competition was attended by 49 teams and nearly 300 students including Michigan State, Purdue, Ohio State, University of Southern California (USC), and Arizona State. It featured a career fair with nearly 30 employers including many of Engineering News-Record‘s (ENR) top contractors.
This year’s design build competition problem asked students to provide a complete design and construction proposal for an urban mixed-use building in the St. Louis area, while maximizing the capitalization rate. Assisting McCarthy in judging the proposals was the chief investment officer from The Koman Group, a commercial real estate investment and development firm.
All members of this year’s ISU team will be graduating by May 2015, so any construction or interior design students interested in participating in this competition for next year, should contact Cleary at jpclear@ilstu.edu.
National open electrical division
Illinois State construction management students Brett Palmer, Bryan Broyles, Dylan McNish, Jeremy Bahn, Andrew Titlow, and Sheldon Fox, advised by Cleary, competed in the ASC Great Lakes Region student competition (national open electrical division) sponsored by Aldridge Electric.
This year’s conference and competition was attended by 49 teams and nearly 300 students including Michigan State, Purdue, Ohio State, USC, and Arizona State and featured a career fair with nearly 30 employers including many of ENR’s top contractors.
This year’s problem asked the students to provide a complete electrical construction proposal including adjacent work for Maggie Daley Park on Chicago’s lakefront. This is the first year ISU construction management students have competed in the electrical division. These Construction Management Student Association (CMSA) students are also members of the newly formed National Electrical Contractor Association (NECA) Student Chapter and also plan on competing in the NECA national student competition in the next year.
