The American Speech Hearing Association (ASHA) hosted its annual conference in Orlando, Florida, in November.
This conference is a great place for students and faculty to present research they have conducted and also learn about other research going on throughout the country, all while networking with peers and professionals in the field of communication sciences and disorders.
This year, many Illinois State University faculty and graduate students attended the conference and presented posters and instructed technical clinical sessions including the following:
Jean Sawyer, panel presentation on “Childhood stuttering: Pathways of Persistency and Recovery.”
Jennifer Friberg, Sarah Ginsberg, Colleen Visconti, and Courtney McGill, poster presentation on “SoTL Research in CSD Journals: Implications for Scholarly Teachers & SoTL Research.”
Graciela Arias and Jennifer Friberg, technical research session on “Bilingual Language Assessment: Contemporary vs. Recommended Practices.”
Jennifer Friberg and Heidi Harbers, poster presentation on “Cross-Circular Problem-Based Learning: Leaving the Silos Behind.”
Jennine Harvey, poster presentation on “Effects of Frequency of Cognitive Stimulation Program Implementation on Cognitive Function in Normally Aging Individuals.”
Lisa Vinney, Miriam van Mersbergen, Nadine Connor, and Lyn Turkstra, technical research session on “Self-Regulation & Vocal Behavior: The Challenges of Consciously Controlling the Voice.”
Ann Beck, Scott Seeman, Heidi Verticchio, and Jessica Rice, poster presentation on “Yoga as a Stress Management Technique for CSD Graduate Students.”
Daria Constantinescu and Ann Beck, poster presentation on “Stakeholder Perspectives of the Effectiveness of Augmentative & Alternative Communication Techniques with Children with Autism.”
In addition, Rebecca Pearson, a representative from ISU’s National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) chapter, also a regional delegate for national NSSLHA, attended this year’s conference. In her role with national NSSLHA, Pearson was responsible for assisting with the student day session at the convention, attending formal meetings regarding budget and funding, and began the initial planning for the student day at next year’s ASHA convention.
“This was a great opportunity to not only represent NSSLHA, but also represent Illinois State University,” Pearson said.
