The College of Applied Science and Technology’s (CAST) 2015 Science and Technology Week will be held Monday, April 6, through Friday, April 10. This year there are several different speakers and events geared toward the interests of CAST students and faculty.
Professional Development Dinner
5 p.m. April 6; Prairie Room, Bone Student Center
Mingle with College of Applied Science and Technology alumni at our Professional Development Dinner.
- 5–6 p.m.: Mocktail and mingle hour
- 6 p.m.: Dinner and presentation
Student tickets are just $20, or registered student organizations (RSOs) may purchase an entire table. Sign up by March 27 by emailing Kara Pool Snyder.
Keynote speakers Jennifer Thompson and Ronald Cotton
7 p.m. April 7; Prairie Room, Bone Student Center
Listen to Jennifer Thompson and Ronald Cotton tell their story from rape and wrongful conviction to their unlikely friendship. This friendship became the basis for The New York Times best-selling book Picking Cotton.
This event is free and open to the public. A book signing will immediately follow the lecture at the Barnes & Noble-Illinois State University Bookstore, in the Bone Student Center.
Neon at Night 5K
8 p.m. April 8; Student Fitness Center
Campus Recreation and the College of Applied Science and Technology are joining forces to co-host this second annual 5K fun run.
Registration is only $15 for Illinois State University students and includes a long-sleeve neon T-shirt and a race packet if you register before March 24.
The race will begin at 8 p.m. in front of the Student Fitness Center. Immediately following the race, join us for an after party featuring music, food, a photo booth, and much more!

Andre Jefferson: “Science at Play”
10 a.m. April 9; Auditorium, Metcalf School
Andre Jefferson is a preteen with a unique interest: constructing stick bombs. He’s been featured on Nickelodeon, CNN’s Anderson Cooper show, and TEDx Indy. Come watch him build a stick bomb!

Child life specialist Aya Fujiwara
1 p.m. April 9; 212 Turner Hall
Illinois State child life program alum Aya Fujiwara, M.S. ’03, will speak about her work educating children in Japan about the hospital and decreasing the stress associated with health care for children and their families.

Michael Turvey: “The Theory of Perception-Action for All Organisms: What Kind of Science Does It Entail?”
3:30 p.m. April 9; Old Main Room, Bone Student Center
University of Connecticut Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Experimental Psychology Michael Turvey suggests that the key to understanding perception-action tasks is developing a theory that applies to all organisms, not just humans. Listen to his talk to learn more about the challenges of implementing such a theory.

Academy of Achievement Induction Ceremony
8:30 a.m. April 10; Club Room, Hancock Stadium
The Academy of Achievement recognizes CAST alumni who are “thought leaders” in their fields.
This event will feature a coffee hour, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., and an induction ceremony, at 9:30 a.m., which are free and open to the public. An invitation-only brunch will be held at 10:30 a.m.
Claudia Carello: “Mutuality in the Perception of Affordances and the Control of Movement”
2 p.m. April 10; Caterpillar Auditorium, State Farm Hall of Business
University of Connecticut Professor Emerita Claudia Carello will discuss the fit between perception and action focusing on dynamic touch. Listen to her speak to learn more about this capability central to maneuvering tools, sports implements, etc.
