Teaching Excellence Series: Keep the Memorization Zombies at Bay

In this series, Beyond the Flashcard, explore how to teach course material that must be memorized in ways that encourage students to move beyond rote memorization.
Keep your students focused, active, and engaged in their learning—even when they need to do a lot of memorization. In this session, you’ll learn how to help students approach memorization strategically and prevent them from becoming unthinking zombie learners.

Learn how to use the Stories.IllinoisState.edu content management system, powered by WordPress, to add news articles, tag them to feed to multiple locations (including your website), insert images, photo galleries, and more. This workshop is open to faculty and staff only.

Get a brief review of the ReggieNet Gradebook in this one-hour workshop. Hands-on lab time will follow the review, so you can set up your grade book for the semester.
Future Professors Development Circle
Wednesday, February 25 • 12–1 p.m.
This professional development circle helps graduate students prepare for a career teaching in the academy. Explore pedagogical issues, effective and disruptive teaching strategies, and gain confidence in your ability to teach at the college level. Share teaching tips, tricks, and get support from other future professors. All participants will receive a copy of Tools for Teaching (Second Edition) by Barbara Gross Davis. This group is open to all graduate students currently teaching or planning to teach in the future. No registration necessary.
Introduction to ReggieNet – Part 1
Wednesday, February 25 • 1–4 p.m.
Get a walkthrough of the ReggieNet interface and the basics of organizing your particular courses. Learn how to organize and display student grades in Gradebook. Communicate with students through Announcements, Course Mail, and Email Tool. Add content to your course site using Syllabus, and Resources and Materials. Note: We strongly encourage you to also attend Introduction to ReggieNet – Part 2, which covers other important tools.
