Each month, the Civil Service Council highlights an exceptional colleague and the outstanding work being done on campus. This month, learn how Rachel Werkman helps keep our campus healthy.
What is your position on campus, and how long have you been with the University?
I am the nurse administrator for ISU’s Student Health Services and have been with ISU since January of 2024.
What do you find most rewarding about your work?
This role is rewarding for several reasons! I enjoy getting to play a part in educating students on how to be good stewards of health care. A lot of the students we see at Student Health Services are learning how to navigate health care on their own for the first time. Things like scheduling appointments, managing medications and diagnoses, being proactive in advocating for themselves, and asking questions are all things we get to walk alongside students with—but also empower them to take the reins on their own. I get to work alongside some really compassionate nurses, educated providers, and devoted leadership on a daily basis to ensure that we continue to be a resource and place of accessibility to ISU students.

What are your hobbies or favorite pastimes?
My family is a big hockey family! We enjoy hockey games (both in person and watching!). I love to read, spend time by my pool, shopping, and all things true crime.
What else would you like others to know about you or your time at Illinois State?
While working at ISU I have found it very rewarding to be able to access the benefits of furthering my own education. It brings a unique perspective to be working for the students, while also being one myself!
