Student Activities and Involvement provides support to over 350 registered student organizations (RSOs). This month’s RSO Spotlight focuses on the Love Your Melon Crew.
Love Your Melon is an apparel brand run by college students across the country who are on a mission to give a hat to every child with cancer in America. For every hat sold, Love Your Melon will provide a child with cancer a hat. Recently, the Illinois State Love Your Melon Crew traveled to Advocate Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn to give hats to children battling cancer.
President Margaret McWeeney is the founder of Illinois State’s Love Your Melon Crew. McWeeney started this organization on campus after scrolling through her Instagram and discovering Love Your Melon. With no hesitation, the senior communication major contacted Love Your Melon headquarters and established the organization on campus in January 2015.
“You don’t appreciate your health until you actually witness these children in a hospital bed,” McWeeney said. “Seeing their faces light up and smile when we hand them a hat are moments that I will never forget.”
Illinois State’s Love Your Melon Crew is limited to 20 members at a time. However, for those who are interested in joining or learning more about Love Your Melon, visit the organization on Facebook and Instagram.
