Illinois State University alumnus, Tim Schachtschneider, ’11, M.M. ’13 won third place and the bronze medal in the Tuba Artist Division of the 2016 Leonard Falcone International Tuba and Euphonium Competition.

For four days each August, euphonium and tuba players from around the world descend upon Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan, to compete for one of several prestigious awards. The Falcone Festival is named in honor of Leonard Falcone, euphoniumist and former director of bands at Michigan State University, and has awarded almost $200,000 in prize money since its inception in 1986.
This event is considered to be one of the premier solo competitions for the tuba and euphonium in the world, and attracts hundreds of international applicants each year. Former prizewinners have gone on to performance careers with major symphony orchestras, premiere military bands and brass bands, as well as careers at major universities throughout the world.
Schachtschneider holds degrees in music business and music performance and currently serves as the auditorium technical director in the School of Music. A graduate of Minooka High School, Schachtschneider has performed with the Peoria Symphony Orchestra, Heartland Festival Orchestra, and the Chicago Brass Band. He has appeared as featured soloist with the Brass Band of Central Illinois and has been a finalist at several military band auditions.
