The School of Information Technology (IT) is very grateful for the support of our alumni. Whether a recent graduate or an IT veteran who has risen to a senior level, alumni contribute unique insights that are valuable to both the school and our students. We encourage alumni to stay connected with the School of Information Technology and endeavor to provide ample opportunities for alumni to get involved. There are opportunities to get involved as a guest speaker, a partner on a class project, an internship sponsor, a member of one of our advisory boards and more.
One of the ways alumni can have a meaningful impact is the IT Professional Mentorship Program. This program, currently in its fourth year, matches up successful IT professionals with current students in order to provide guidance in several areas:
- Exploration of possible career paths
- Learning about responsibilities and duties of IT professionals in various roles
- Understanding the connection between academic studies and a professional career
- Developing the required soft skills to become a successful IT professional
Mentors and mentees participate in individual and group events. Mentors and mentees schedule one-on-one meetings and activities, many attended the January welcome back social hosted by IT, and a group of mentees traveled to a special job shadowing event organized and hosted by alumni at Discover Financial.
While the mentorship program offers obvious benefits to students, professional mentors relate that they also benefit from the experience. Previous mentors have said that the mentorship experience was “enriching on a personal level,” “taught me to be a better coach and help others achieve their goals,” and “showed me a new perspective.”
