Working with International Students
Monday, July 10 • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Sometimes as teachers, we know an international student needs special attention to truly succeed in our classroom. But exactly how can we help? Where do we begin? Through this workshop, explore the issues that many international students face in U.S. higher education. Learn how to incorporate the perspectives of students in your teaching, and discover how to help international students acquire the skills they need to thrive. Lunch is provided. A stipend is available for eligible participants. Registration is required.
Challenging Students with Interrupted Case Studies
Facilitator: Bill Anderson, Family and Consumer Sciences
Monday, July 10 • 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Case studies can serve as a context for meaning-making during instruction. However, case-based instruction (CBI) also has recognized limitations. For instance, many case studies are limited in length, address only a few course concepts, and can be, potentially, a largely passive activity. This workshop will introduce an interrupted case-studies (ICS) format that could address almost all limitations typically associated with CBI, as well as raise critical-thinking levels by providing vicarious, but meaningful, opportunities to relate course material to case-study events and individuals. Participants will compare and contrast CBI and ICS, participate in a small-scale ICS, and develop ways to move currently used print and video case studies to an interrupted format. A stipend is available for eligible participants. Registration is required.
Incorporating Concepts of Character into Your Class
Facilitators: Phyllis McCluskey-Titus, Educational Administration and Foundations; Jim Almeda, Health Promotion and Wellness; Nikki Brauer, Health Promotion and Wellness; and Kerri Calvert, Health Promotion and Wellness
Monday, July 10 • 1 to 4 p.m.
“Character Day,” celebrated this year on September 13, gives campus communities the opportunity to talk about common values and character strengths that each member possesses and contributes. Within your class, there may be opportunities to incorporate activities and conversation around character. This program, presented by Illinois State faculty and staff, and coordinated by Heath Promotion and Wellness, can assist you in creating class sessions that allow students to understand the concept of character, assess their character strengths, and share in conversations about what character means. You’ll learn how to help students identify meaningful connections between themselves and their classmates and to reflect on how their values and strengths align with their actions and behaviors. Bring your course syllabus or outline and be prepared to brainstorm and discuss plans for your class with facilitators and colleagues. A stipend is available for eligible participants. Registration is required.
Reinvent Your Course for Diversity
Starts Tuesday, July 11 • 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Also meets: July 13, 18, 20, and 25, and August 3
To prepare students to live and work in our very complex world is a core aspect of Educating Illinois. Success depends upon incorporating diverse content and perspectives into our teaching. It is also important to be mindful of the diverse ways people communicate and learn. This workshop will help you reflect on your course content and explore how that content can meet the needs of the diverse student population at Illinois State University. Incorporate strategies that create a culturally inclusive classroom climate, while facilitating conversations that challenge students’ ethnic and cultural assumptions. Lunch is provided for the full-day meeting on July 11. This cohort will also participate in the Summer Showcase on August 3 at the Alumni Center. A $500 stipend is available to eligible participants who complete the program.

Best Practices for Evaluating Teaching
Wednesday, July 12 • 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
The quality of instruction has a profound impact on student learning. But is your department or school accurately measuring teaching effectiveness? How do student ratings of instruction impact the retention of minority faculty in your department?
In this workshop—designed for department chairs, school directors, and Department Faculty Staff Committee (DFSC) members— you will examine recent research about the biases in student evaluations, how they affect retention of minority faculty, and how to provide alternative methods to assess teaching effectiveness. Work on a case study, discuss alternative methods for the evaluation of teaching, and leave with resources about alternative teaching evaluation methods and planning. For chairs, directors, or faculty only. No stipend is available for this event. Registration is required.
