On April 24, 2024, the Department of Politics & Government hosted its 31st Annual Conference for Students of Political Science.
Research Challenge Grant winners announced
Eight research projects involving 16 faculty members are the winners of the inaugural Dean’s Research Challenge Grants. Proposals submitted this year were required to focus on one of two themes: “Equity” or “Environment.” Recipients will deliver presentations about their research projects at a College of Arts and Sciences Research Symposium on Friday, October 11.
CAS researchers awarded Dean’s Challenge Grant for Chicago River project
A group of Illinois State researchers have received a $6,000 College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Challenge Grant to research the impact of floating gardens on the Chicago River. Drs. Mike Hendricks and Noha Shawki, both of the Department of Politics and Government, received this funding in collaboration with Dr. Joan Brehm, of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, and Drs. Eric Peterson and Alec Foster, both of the Department of Geography, Geology, and the Environment.

Dr. Touré Reed, professor of history, will deliver the Spring College Lecture on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, at 5 p.m., in the Circus Room of the Bone Student Center. His talk, “Is it Race or Racism?: Why Binary Explanations for Inequality Have Failed Black Americans,” is free and open to the public.
Bone Lecture to offer postcolonial historical sociology of militarized policing in Britain and the U.S.
Dr. Julian Go will be giving a public talk on his new book as the Robert G. Bone Distinguished Lecturer for 2024 on March 28, at 6 p.m. at the Bone Student Center, Old Main Room. The event is free and open to the public.

Distinguished Professor Ali Riaz and Department of Politics and Government alum Md. Sohel Rana, M.S. ‘21, have published the book How Autocrats Rise: Sequences of Democratic Backsliding.
Research award winners for 2023-2024 announced
Illinois State University announced the winners of the Outstanding University Researcher and the Outstanding University Creative Activity awards. Also honored are the winners of the Research Initiative Awards and the Creative Activity Initiative Awards. Recipients for these awards are selected from competitive pools of candidates.

Dr. Noha Shawki, professor in the Department of Politics and Government, published two co-authored articles in 2023: “Building Solidarity in the Slow Food Movement,” co-authored with Dr. Gina Hunter and published in The International Journal of Sociology of Agriculture and Food (IJSAF), and “Understanding polycentrically organized movements: An analysis of the Slow Food and Fair Trade movements in Europe,” co-authored with Dr. Melissa Schnyder and published in the Journal of Civil Society.
