Michael D. Schermer ’73, M.S. ’78, served as vice president of the student body in 1973. He began working at Illinois State in Student Affairs in 1974, building a 30-year career during which he held multiple positions.
The Cheung, Brown, Phi Sigma Award for Student Publications rewards research and discovery
Dr. H. Tak Cheung began his Illinois State career in 1979 as an assistant professor of microbiology in the area of immunology. He became a full professor in 1989 and department chair in 1997. Cheung became the executive director of the School of Biological Sciences in 2008.

Nicole McCoy, a registered nurse of 11 years, is pursuing a master’s degree as a family nurse practitioner at Illinois State. “I am excited to explore different areas in nursing outside of my current expertise and explore how I can best serve my community in the future,” she said.
The Rollie and Mary Mercer Endowed Scholarship helps Redbird student-athletes shine
The Rollie and Mary Mercer Endowed Scholarship was established in 2018 by Mary Mercer in memory of her husband Rollie. The endowment supports a student-athlete in the Illinois State football program. Preference is given to an offensive player who demonstrates a team-first attitude.

The Charlotte E. Talkington Professional Development Fund gives students, faculty, and staff access to professional development
Dr. Charlotte Talkington ’61 is a loyal university supporter. She retired in 1994 after more than 30 years as faculty in the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences. Talkington solidified her support for the department in 2001 by establishing the Charlotte E. Talkington Professional Development Fund in Family and Consumer Sciences.
