ISU launches annual Birds Give Back: Mission Possible

The fourth annual Birds Give Back, Illinois State’s own giving day, will be held on Thursday, February 24, during ISU’s Redbird Philanthropy Week scheduled from February 21-25.
With gratitude for the support he received, Hart recently established the Doug Hart Accounting Scholarship to benefit students who demonstrate financial need. The inaugural recipient will be selected for the 2022-2023 academic year.
Department of Biological Sciences Faculty Emeritus Dr. Anthony Liberta was honored at an event on November 18, 2021. Liberta and guests gathered to dedicate the Dr. Anthony Liberta Study Suite in Julian Hall. The suite is located within the Kathryn S. Bohn, M.D., and Thomas E. Nielsen, M.D., Resource Room, which the physician couple funded in 2017.
Academia was not the first career choice for Dr. Gary Weede, who envisioned being an Air Force pilot.
Dr. Neal Gamsky, former dean of students and vice president of Student Affairs, died July 31 at age 90.
The University’s Horticulture Center, located in an expansive field north of campus, is home to hundreds of plant species nurtured by community members and university staff. The Tulley family—John, Janet, Anna, and Joseph—are among the center’s volunteers. They first stumbled upon the center during a bike ride and have since dedicated hundreds of hours planting, weeding and watering. Now a senior history and anthropology major at Illinois State, Anna has also painted murals in the center’s Children’s Garden.
The Richard A. Manahan Family Teaching Excellence Recognition Award was created by Dr. Richard A. Manahan and family in 1984. The award is given to a full-time Department of Educational Administration and Foundations (EAF) faculty member to recognize significant teaching quality. The recipient’s quality to, “inspire students to achieve their full learning potential both in and outside of the classroom” is a desired requirement.
David Dhermy had been working with the Springfield Department of Rehabilitation Services in order to pay for college. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there were many delays in employment that caused Dhermy to experience financial hardship.
Trejuan Hicks ’21 has learned to be resilient.
Michael D. Schermer ’73, M.S. ’78, served as vice president of the student body in 1973. He began working at Illinois State in Student Affairs in 1974, building a 30-year career during which he held multiple positions.
