Kailey Corken-Golz

Kailey Corken-Golz has joined the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) as the new academic advisor for FCS majors.

Corken-Golz is a Cincinnati native who earned a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and a minor in psychology at the University of Alabama and played on the women’s soccer team. After graduation, she moved to Madrid, Spain, to teach English. She then earned master’s degree in the college student personnel program at the University of Dayton. She has three years of experience as an academic advisor from American University in Washington, D.C.

We wanted to find out more about our new academic advisor, so we asked her some questions:

So you’re the new FCS academic advisor. What are you most excited about?

Meeting and working with the faculty, staff, and students in FCS and across campus.

Why did you decide to work in higher education?

I originally thought I wanted to be a Spanish professor, but through some soul searching during the year I lived in Madrid, I realized advising was my path. I started graduate school in a College Student Personnel program and haven’t looked back since.

Why did you choose Illinois State?

Once I relocated to Bloomington-Normal, I started to meet various folks who worked at ISU, and I quickly realized the amount of support and collaboration that exists amongst the faculty/staff, all in an effort to support undergraduate students.

What is the one piece of advice you want to give to FCS students?

Take as many different types of classes/subjects/topics as you can during college. You never know what might spark a passion or interest inside of you.

What are your hobbies?

I love spending time with my family, going on walks and hikes, learning/experiencing new things, and visiting with old friends.

Favorite movie?

Almost Famous or Breakfast at Tiffany’s

What would you do if you won the lottery?

Travel!
