In the days following the inauguration of Donald Trump to the U.S. presidency, people across the globe have been trying to figure out what Trump’s speech means for them. Ali Riaz, chair and University Professor of Politics and Government, told the United News of Bangladesh (UNB), “If we’re to take the inauguration speech of Donald Trump as the outline of the policies of his administration, there are many worrying signals for the world at large.”
Riaz broke down the speech by noting it’s “three principle elements—protectionism, populism, and nationalism.”
“Taken together these will have impacts not only on the United States but also on the workings of multilateral organizations such as the United Nations and the World Trade Organisation,” Riaz said.
If the Trump administration pursues protectionist policies, it has the potential to hurt Bangladesh immensely, Riaz said.
