University Professor Ali Riaz contributed to several news articles on the topic of the Rohingya crisis in recent days.
Riaz talked to the National Catholic Reporter on the Pope’s upcoming visits to Myanmar and Bangladesh. He was also interviewed by French online investigative journal MediaPart (in French) on November 25 in a story in which he underscored the need for a quick resolution of the crisis.
In Outlook India, and in the Daily Star (Dhaka), Riaz argued that the suggested program of repatriation of the refugees is problematic: “The instrument may neither ensure repatriation of all Rohingya refugees, nor allow Bangladesh to involve the international community if the process gets stalled.” Finally, he added, “I’m afraid that within the period stipulated in the signed instrument Myanmar may rush and eventually engage in a small-scale symbolic repatriation to fend off international pressure.”
