Distinguished Professor Ali Riaz published an op-ed about the recent student protests in Bangladesh. The piece, titled “Seeking justice in Dhaka,” appeared in the August 14, 2018 edition of Indian Express.
Riaz argues that the government’s heavy-handed response is part of a long pattern of tolerating little to no dissent. Given the “culture of fear” in the society, Riaz notes “if the behaviour of past years is any indication, the predictable scenario is that the government further tightens its grip, continues to go against anyone it thinks participated in the movement, puts pressure on the media, and arrests Opposition leaders for allegedly inciting violence.”
